synopsis

A three-minute video centered on the figure of the homeless person, drawing on the ancient myth of the Pillars of Hercules, the boundaries of the known world, while simultaneously revisiting themes of metaphysics, particularly the series of paintings Piazze d’Italia by Giorgio de Chirico.

In Ombre, the camera focuses in particular on the homeless people who inhabit the galleries and squares of Milan, portraying them as de Chirico-like mannequins, “metaphysical objects” unconsciously ignored by passers-by and perpetually immersed in an urban soundscape of footsteps, car horns, sirens, and other noises, which at night gives way to silence.

There is neither a beginning nor an end, but rather a video loop displayed within a digital frame hanging on a wall, allowing the viewer to feel free to stop at any moment and observe what lies “beyond the Pillars of Hercules.”Art becomes a universal means of overcoming the limits of knowledge. The homeless person, invisible on the street, becomes visible inside the museum the place revealed beyond the Pillars of Hercules. Everyone can approach them, the keepers of stories and lived experiences.
